While UIL High School Soccer is still in District play, TAPPS had the 2nd round of the their playoffs this past weekend for both boys and girls. Here are the results from the Area Round for your San Antonio teams. Shout out to Coach Cano for helping with some of the results.
Central Catholic is looking for its 4th State Title in 4 straight years this season. They had a 4-1 win over Tomball Concordia Lutheran Crusaders after having a 1st round bye. North Carolina State commit and San Antonio FC player Jose Gallegos was involved in all 4 goals scoring 2 and assisting 2. They will go on to face Kelly Catholic (Beaumont) on Thursday Feb 13th. The Monsignor Kelly Catholic Boys team defeated Austin St. Dominic Savio Catholic Eagles 4-2, and come into the match having scored 61 goals on the season from 12 different contributors, which has been the story for the team all season long.
Antonian College Preparatory HS was defeated 4-1 on Saturday by Village School Vikings (Houston). The Vikings did a great job of making the most with their chances, scoring off of a couple of set pieces. Antonian played a much better 2nd half but were unable to make up the deficit. Coach Rule will look to continue to build this program.
Saint Mary’s Hall was also defeated on Saturday in the Area Round after winning their 1st match of the Tournament vs St John XXIII (Katy) 3-2. The Barron’s lost 0-2 to St. Thomas Catholic HS (Houston) who are 24-2-1 this season. Tough result against a quality opponent for Coach Ramos.
Best of luck to all the graduating Seniors in their futures, and all the lessons learned on and off the pitch this season. We will keep you posted on Central Catholic as they chase their 4th State Title.
Antonian College Preparatory HS Girls are also competing in the State Tournament, and were able to get the win over Concordia Lutheran HS (Tomball) 2-0. They will advance to face Kelly Catholic Bulldogs (Beaumont) February 13th, who defeated Incarnate Word HS 5-2. Antonian is going to be looking for a way to stop Bulldog standout Julia Phelan who scored four of the five goals versus Incarnate Word.
As mentioned earlier Incarnate Word lost in a tough match-up versus Kelly Catholic Bulldogs. Julia Phelan for the Bulldogs scored their 1st goal in the 4′ and didn’t stop there, she scored another goal 6 minutes later, and had a hat trick in the first 16′. Incarnate Defender Maddie Belvins scored off a free kick in the 50′ to make it 4-1, and Freshman Midfielder Kirsten Murray would score a 2nd for the Shamrocks to make it 5-2 for the final.
Antonian wasn’t the only San Antonio school with both boy’s and girls competing. St Mary’s Hall Girl Barons were also looking for a State Title. The Barons would fall 0-2 versus Duchenese Academy of the Sacred Heart (Houston).
San Antonio also has several teams competing in Division 2 TAPPS Playoffs. TMI Episcopal Boys are looking to win Back to Back State Titles, and won their Area Round match with an impressive 7-1 victory over Fort Bend Christian Academy (Sugar Land). San Antonio Christian High School Lions lost a close match-up in overtime 0-1 versus St Joseph Academy (Brownsville).
San Antonio Christian Girls were able to pull away in a close one versus Second Baptist School (Houston). It was 2-2 at halftime, but a strong 2nd half performance resulted in a 6-3 win for the Lions. Holy Cross Knights were also in the hunt, and had a 2-0 lead at halftime, but St. Joseph bounced back in the 2nd half and the Knights would lose 2-5.
We will keep you updated on the Division 2 TAPPS race as well, so be sure to follow us on social media @SATXSoccer for all your San Antonio High School news.
