UPSL Central Conference Kicks-Off in San Antonio

San Antonio FC wasn’t the only San Antonio men’s soccer team with a win under its belt this past weekend, the UPSL Pro Premiere league is also underway with our San Antonio teams a little late to the party. Harry did a great job breaking down the different UPSL teams here in San Antonio if you need a refresher before we get started.

Teams are scattered a little bit in the Central Conference Heart division in terms of matches played with some of the teams up north being 3 matches in already, but here is how things shook out for your hometown boys.

Defending Champions of the Heart Division your San Antonio Runners SC certainly got off a hot start. They were undefeated in the the regular season last year, and continued their winning streak against Round Rock SC Friday night on the road with an impressive 4-0 victory. Their 1st goal came in the 20th minute from Midfielder Mikey Maldonado, who also tallied an assist in the match. Mikey wasn’t the only Runners player to show up twice on the match sheet though, Forward Reis Woolley got a brace for the runners making the score 3-0. Midfielder Keegan Woolley scored would score the fourth late in the game to give the Runners a commanding 4-0 victory in their season opener. They will place their first home match Saturday 4/13 at 7:00pm @ UTSA Rec Fields.

Samba FC kicked off their season at home last night versus Coyotes FC out of Temple, TX. Samba has rejoined the Heart Division this season, and will be looking for redemption after just missing the playoffs last season. It was a 0-0 tie for much of the match, but would finish in a grand fashion. Coyotes would score first in the 76′ on a great cross to the back post where they had an attacking player with a sliding finish. Samba FC would battle back and Luciano “Neto” Chagas scored the equalizer on a PK that was awarded after one of their players was taken out from behind inside the box. Samba wasn’t settled with just one point, and scored what would be the game winning goal on a Free Kick from Lubomir Bogdanov, who placed the kick perfectly in the upper right hand corner to give them a 2-1 lead. Samba FC would get the insurance goal in extra time by way of Francis Wilson, and walk away with a hard fought 3 points. Their next match will be on the road versus current front runner FC Waco Saturday 4/13 at 5:00pm.

Boerne FC Thunder was scheduled to face off this past weekend versus FC Waco, but the match was canceled due to weather. Will update on rescheduling when we have more info. Last year we saw a lot of that early on so hopefully this year we wont have as many issues with Mother Nature. Boerne FC won their 1st match against FC Knights 2-0 last Saturday at home in their season opener, with goals coming from Manny Hulbin and Julien Buduri. They will have a little bit of a rest before our first San Antonio head to head match-up when they take on the San Antonio Runners Wednesday 4/17 at 7:00pm on the UTSA Rec Fields.

We finish off the action with San Antonio Corinthians who came back on the scene this last off-season, but are playing in the South Division. In a weird turn of events the Corinthians actually had to forfeit their first match against Athletic Katy FC when their team showed up late due to van issues. They wasted no time in making up for lost points though on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Texas International FC. Carlos Guerrero would score the Corinthians 1st goal of the season in the 35′ after a beautiful cross by Juan Nava to put the Corinthians up 1-0. San Antonio Corinthian’s second goal would come in the 65′ by Eduardo Escareno off a pass by Abaraham Alpuche to give the Corinthians their 1st win of the regular season.
