Match Report May 20, 2018

Wheatley Heights Sports Complex, San Antonio

Samba FC kicked off their United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) season on Sunday against the Bay Area Oilers (otherwise known as Houston USA ISL) at home on a rainy and overcast day. This is soccer though so a few clouds don’t stop the crowds from coming or the boys from stepping onto the pitch.

Samba took control early maintaining a majority of the possession for the 1st 25 minutes. In the 3rd minute a beautiful free kick by Defender David Aguilera found the head of Defender Cameron Cortez and went just left of the goal.

Mishori Alsadoor put Samba ahead in the 18th minute when he gave the Oilers a clinic on Ball Handling as he evaded 2 defenders at the top of the box and calmly spun around the keeper to easily put it into the now open goal.

Samba almost grabbed a 2nd when the Oilers keeper failed to cleanly control a shot and Marcelino Zamora found the back of the net, but the play was ruled offside. It was at this time that the Oilers woke up and began to control the match.

Erik Escobar of the Oilers was on the receiving end of a nice cross in the 31st minute to slot it past an outstretched and diving Yuseff Omisade. 10 minutes later Escobar would grab another to make the score 2 – 1 in favor of the Oilers.

In a bit of bad luck the Samba’s goalkeeper Yuseff Omisade would leave the match in the 43rd minute with an injury to be replaced by Justin Jimenez. Hopefully nothing serious and he despite the result Yuseff seemed in a good mood after the match so hopefully he isn’t out long as he looked good in net and had some really nice saves.

The second half was a stalemate as both clubs battled for possession and opportunities, but nothing came for either. The match would end with the Oilers getting their 1st win of the season with a final of 2 – 1 behind Erik Escobar’s brace.

Both Clubs looked good, but it was evident that the Oilers had been together a bit longer and had already taken the pitch this season. You can see a lot of individual talent out there for the Samba’s but those connections that become second nature just needs a bit more time to develop. Both Yuseff Omisade and Justin Jimenez looked really good in between the post, 2 well composed keepers who have a great instinct of where the opposing player is going to try and place the ball. Defenders David Aguilar, Adam Cerny and Cameron Cortez are going to be a tough backline for opposing players to break down and the free kicks of Aguilar are going to be a headache for opposing clubs. Mishori Alsadoor and Enoc Roches are going to give opposing defenses fits with their ball handling and instincts both had the defenses completely turned around at times during Sunday’s match. It is going to be an exciting season watching these players develop individually and as a team.

We hope to see everyone out at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex at 2pm June 2nd as Samba FC takes on the Knights.
